CHI St. Vincent said Tuesday that Dr. Peter Emanuel, its director of oncology services, has been appointed vice president of oncology for its parent company, CommonSpirit Health System.
Emanuel will continue to lead the oncology program at CHI St. Vincent while also serving as lead physician for CommonSpirit Health, which is launching its first nationwide Oncology Clinical Institute.
“This is an incredible opportunity to positively impact the lives and improve the health of so many people, both here in Arkansas and around the country,” Emanuel said in a news release. “I’m honored to pursue that great work while also continuing to care for my patients and build this important program here in Central Arkansas.”
Arkansas Business first reported Emanuel’s additional duties in its Sept. 5 Whispers column.
CommonSpirit Health System has been around since the 2019 merger of two Roman Catholic health systems, CHI and Dignity Health of San Francisco.
The $29 billion merged entity was renamed CommonSpirit, and it is the second largest nonprofit health system in the nation, behind HCA Healthcare of Nashville, Tennessee.
CommonSpirit has 140 hospitals in 21 states.
Emanuel, a renowned oncologist and leading researcher of adult and pediatric forms of leukemia, joined CHI St. Vincent in 2018 after working with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, where he was director of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute.
A Wisconsin native, Emanuel attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin. He completed an internship and residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital.
After a fellowship in hematology/oncology at UAB, he worked as a professor in the Department of Medicine, Genetics and Biochemistry at UAB. He was acting director of UAB’s Comprehensive Cancer Institute before joining UAMS in 2007.
