UA has not confirmed that it is hiring Long. UA System President B. Alan Sugg, Chancellor John White, Broyles and members of the UA Board of Trustees are expected at the news conference.
White has been leading the search for a new AD since Broyles announced in February that he would retire on Dec. 31. White has kept the search under wraps, refraining from writing memos or e-mails related to the new hiring. But some media outlets are reporting that sources have told them Long will replace Broyles.
Long has been Pitt’s athletic director since 2003. One of his first acts as Pitt AD was changing the school’s designated name from "Pittsburgh" back to "Pitt." He also altered the school’s logo to a block-lettered font instead of a scripted one.
Long also hired head football coach Dave Wannstadt, the former head coach for the Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears who also coached at Oklahoma State at the same time that UA football coach Houston Nutt was a player there.
Broyles will have been employed by the UA for 50 years in December. He has been athletic director since 1974 and was the school’s head football coach from 1957 until 1976.
