Rheem Seeks to Buy Out 50 Fort Smith Workers

1 min read

Rheem Manufacturing Co. has announced "a voluntary, early retirement, reduction-in-force program" to 50 salaried employees of the Air Conditioning Division of its Fort Smith plant.

Employees have until June 1 to accept or decline to participate in the program, said a company press release, issued Tuesday.

"Pension benefits, extended insurance coverage and transition allowance are included in the voluntary program," the release said.

Rheem, with headquarters in Atlanta, is one of the world’s leading makers of air-conditioning and heating equipment. Its brands include Raypak, Ruud and Rheem.

Rick Lolley, director of human resources at the Fort Smith plant, issued the release but did not return a telephone message requesting additional comment.

Rheem laid off 185 workers at the plant in October, noting declining demand and the recession.
