The work will allow the auditorium to host productions like "Phantom of the Opera," announced Monday by Celebrity Attractions CEO Ed Payton, Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola and Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Gretchen Hall.
With about 14 months remaining to finish a massive renovation, construction at Robinson Center is on target to be complete in November 2016, officials said Monday.
The renovation adds more backstage space as well as storage and improved acoustics. In July, the city of Little Rock marked the one-year construction milestone on the $70 million project.
Part of the changes give the theater the capability to host bigger shows, in turn bringing in more money. At an announcement at the center on Monday, Ed Payton, CEO of Celebrity Attractions, revealed that “Phantom of the Opera” will play in March 2017.
According to Payton, the show recently spent two weeks in Oklahoma City where it had an estimated $11 million impact and he expects to see the same in Little Rock.
“The previous facility did not have the capacity for this show,” said Gretchen Hall, president and CEO of the Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau.
According to Hall, the Robinson project remains on schedule and on budget.
