Sonny Williams’ Back in Original Owner’s Hands

2 min read

Andy Agar has bought back Sonny Williams’ Steak Room, the downtown Little Rock restaurant he began in 1999 and sold in 2002.

Agar closed the sale on Friday, Oct. 9, along with several investors whom he declined to name. He said that everything about the restaurant has remained the same over the 16 years, from the wait staff to the chefs to the decor.

However, Agar is making plans for updates and renovations to the building. Since the closing of the sale, he has been meeting with designers, decorators and contractors.

Renovation plans include a new color scheme and new private dining rooms designed for corporate events or parties.

Agar said he sold his interest in the business in 2002 simply because he “didn’t have the time to devote to it.” Since then, he has worked in the financial services industry. Now, however, the ownership of Sonny Williams’ is his sole job.

“Downtown Little Rock has become a destination,” Agar said. “The whole area downtown has exploded. The goal was and still is to have the best steakhouse in Arkansas … We have consistency in food and service.”

Sonny Williams’ paid local option tax on 2014 sales of $1.51 million, not including alcoholic beverages. A change in state law that took effect forbids the release of hotel and restaurant tax data, but data available before the new law took effect in July showed that Sonny Williams’ reported food-only sales of $594,183 in the first five months of 2015, down about 5 percent from the same period last year.
