Srygley Learns $1M Lesson from LobbyistLock Icon

Robert Srygley doesn’t think he’ll ever get paid on the $1 million judgment recently received against his former longtime friend.

The former president of the Arkansas Check Cashers Association Inc. loaned lobbyist Don Tilton of Little Rock a total of $1 million in 2020, according to the lawsuit Srygley filed last year in Washington County Circuit Court.

Srygley said Tilton told him the money was going to be used to build his house in Chenal in Little Rock. Srygley, of Springdale, first loaned Tilton $750,000 in May 2020, with the principal and interest due on Dec. 31, according to the suit. The house is owned by Tilton’s trust.

In August 2020, Tilton borrowed $250,000 more for construction of the home. The payment for that loan was also due at the end of 2020.

The suit said Tilton didn’t make the payments on Dec. 31, 2020.

Last month, Washington Circuit Judge John Threet awarded Srygley $1 million plus $88,000 in interest.

“I’m sure I won’t ever get paid, but that’s just one of them deals,” Srygley said. “It’s a life lesson. It’s an expensive one.” Srygley was represented by Larry McCredy of the RMP LLP firm in Springdale.

Tilton told Whispers that the case “was just a matter of a difference of opinion between two friends as to how to get to the bottom of it. It’s still that.”

Tilton said there’s no question that he owes Srygley the money, but the question instead is how he’s going to repay it. “I feel bad that he has taken the course he has,” he said. Tilton was represented by attorney Ron Hope of Hope O’Dwyer Wilson & Arnold of Little Rock.
