Former state Sen. Jeremy Hutchinson continues to face financial problems in addition to his legal woes.
The Arkansas Department of Finance & Administration last month filed a certificate of indebtedness against him in Pulaski County Circuit Court, holding that he owes the state $3,298 in individual income tax for 2017.
Whispers reported late last year that First Security Bank of Searcy filed a foreclosure complaint against him, saying Hutchinson was in default and owed at least $338,001 for the principal of the mortgage on Unit 331 at 3 Chenal Woods Drive in Little Rock. The complaint alleged he also owed past-due interest as well as late fees, past-due property association dues and a host of other fees.
Well, First Security recovered that property in a $150,000 foreclosure sale on Jan. 24. And on Feb. 26, the bank paid the state $11,776 in back taxes, penalties and interest owed for 2015-17.
Hutchinson, a nephew of Gov. Asa Hutchinson, resigned from the state Senate last summer after being indicted on 12 counts of wire fraud and filing false tax returns. Prosecutors allege he spent campaign contributions on personal luxuries and expenses, and falsified campaign finance reports and tax filings.
In February, his lawyers filed a motion to dismiss the charges, citing “a pattern of gross misconduct” by the FBI. And on Tuesday, his lawyers filed additional arguments in federal court, asking that the charges be dismissed because of alleged government misconduct. Prosecutors have denied the allegations.
A message left with Hutchinson wasn’t returned as of press time.
