A strong stock market and healthy economy boosted charitable giving by American individuals, bequests, foundations and corporations in 2017, with total gifts to U.S. charities hitting an estimated $410.02 billion. That’s according to Giving USA 2018: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2017.

Giving exceeded $400 billion in a single year for the first time, rising 5.2 percent last year — 3 percent adjusted for inflation — over the $389.64 contributed in 2016.
Some highlights of the report:
► Giving to foundations saw the largest growth in charitable contributions, increasing 15.5 percent, based on data provided by the Foundation Center. Huge gifts by major philanthropists to their foundations largely accounted for this growth.
► In addition to foundations, the charitable sectors seeing the most growth were the arts, culture and humanities; public-society benefit; health; and the environment/animals.
