Matt McCoy
Matt McCoy, the associate general counsel at the University of Arkansas System, will replace Scott Varady in the general counsel office at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville beginning Jan. 4, 2016.
Varady, the university’s associate general counsel, will take over as executive director of the Razorback Foundation, the nonprofit fundraising arm of the university’s athletic department, on Dec. 1. McCoy has worked for the UA System for the past six years and has represented universities or governmental entities for 15 years.
“Matt has proven himself to be an outstanding attorney during his time with the U of A System office,” said Fred Harrison, general counsel for the UA System. “I am confident he will be an excellent addition to the office on the Fayetteville campus.”
The UA said McCoy successfully defended constitutional challenges to the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery and other state legislation before the Arkansas Supreme Court. He was the state’s lead counsel in Lakeview v. Huckabee, the state’s long-running school funding litigation, when the Arkansas Supreme Court declared Arkansas’ system of public education constitutional.
McCoy also served on the state attorney general’s Legislative Affairs Committee and advised the Arkansas House and Senate Joint Education Committees from 2006 to 2008 on matters related to education policy and adequacy.
McCoy earned his law degree from the University of Arkansas.
