U.S. Census Says More Than 8 Out of 10 American Households Own Computers

In 2013, 83.8 percent of U.S. households owned a computer and 74.4 percent reported Internet use, according to a November report from the Census Bureau.

The report, “Computer & Internet Use in the United States: 2013,” is based on responses to the American Community Survey, which collected information on computer and Internet use for the first time last year. It’s the largest such survey in the United States, and it analyzes computer ownership and Internet use by age, sex, race and Hispanic origin, income and education.

Other highlights of the report:

  • 78.5 percent of all households own a desktop or laptop computer;
  • 63.6 percent have a handheld computer;
  • 73.4 percent of households using the Internet reported having a high-speed connection; and
  • Computer ownership and Internet use were most common in homes with relatively young householders, in white and Asian households, in high-income households, in metropolitan areas and in homes with relatively high levels of education.
