U.S. health care spending grew by 5.3 percent in 2014, to $3 trillion, or $9,523 per person, according to the latest figures available from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid. That was an increase over the 2.9 percent growth seen in 2013.
“The faster growth experienced in 2014 was primarily due to the major coverage expansions under the Affordable Care Act, particularly for Medicaid and private health insurance,” the CMS said.
Health care spending accounted for 17.5 percent of the U.S. economy in 2014, up from 17.3 percent in 2013.
The charts shown above break down where that $3 trillion went and where it came from.
