USA Truck Expands West Memphis Terminal to Train Drivers

1 min read

USA Truck of Van Buren is expanding its West Memphis terminal in the hopes of adding to its operations in the future.

Burton Weis, USA Truck’s vice president of human resources, said two people have already been hired and three more will be added by April 1. The jobs are in driver recruitment and training, operations supervision and safety management, and the salary ranges will be between $36,000 and $55,000.

Weis said USA Truck had fewer than 50 drivers in the Memphis region before the company expanded in 2013, and now the company has about 225 drivers. The five support personnel will help USA Truck expand Memphis operations even more, with the idea that the facility can accommodate 400 Memphis-based drivers.

“That’s the long-term goal, to get to that point,” Weis said. “We’ll hire drivers locally, train then and then manage them out of the same facility.”

Weis said handing recruiting, training and management locally will help guarantee more home time for drivers, which is a huge selling point in today’s driver market, as well as save money for USA Truck through efficiency. Weis said USA Truck is studying possible expansion at facilities in other markets but no decision has been made.
