Welcome Message from 2016 AIA President Timothy Maddox, AIA

2 min read

I am honored to present the 2016 AIA Arkansas Design Awards. This publication showcases the outstanding design talent belonging to Arkansas firms. These projects represent the best our design community has to offer. This publication will be distributed by Arkansas Business statewide, showcasing the rich design diversity, incredible talent, and wonderful projects AIA Arkansas’ architects have produced.

The cover of this year’s publication features the recipient of the 2015 AIA Arkansas Members’ Choice Award; the Mid-America Science Museum Skywalk, designed by Wittenberg Delony & Davidson Inc.

A special thank you goes to our independent panel of judges who accepted the challenge of selecting this year’s design award recipients from an outstanding group of entries. The judges from Nashville, Tennessee, were Heather Mathias, principal at Hastings Architecture; Tracey Ford, principal at EOA Architects; and Manuel Zeitlin, principal at Manuel Zeitlin Architects.

The Design Awards Program is intended to increase awareness of the level of design excellence produced by Arkansas architects. In addition to the jury selected recipients, our chapter honors two other recipients through the Members’ Choice Award and the People’s Choice Award. It allows the public to view all entries and choose their favorite project. The winner is determined by popular choice.

The Award of Merit was established to recognize a person, agency or company that has advanced the cause of good planning and design. This year’s recipient is Dr. Ethel Goodstein-Murphree, Assoc. AIA.

The Emerging Professional Award is intended to recognize a new professional who has expanded the role of the architect through civic participation and professional mentorship, thereby representing the goals of AIA to a larger audience. Any member or associate member of AIA Arkansas practicing for less than 10 years is eligible for this award. Special consideration is given to newly licensed members, members who are currently pursuing licensure, and to minority members. This year’s Emerging Professional Award recipient is Patty Opitz, AIA. She is a licensed associate staff architect of Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects.

The Dick Savage Award was established to recognize a member who has made notable, significant contributions to the chapter and the profession. This year’s recipient is Michael Lejong, AIA. He is a principal at MAHG Architecture, Inc.

The Chapter Awards and all Design Awards were presented at the annual awards banquet on Friday, Nov. 4 in Rogers. I hope you enjoy this publication as it celebrates architecture and the architects who practice in our great state. I look forward to hearing your feedback about how AIA Arkansas can continue to serve its members and advance the recognition of quality design in our beautiful state of Arkansas.

Respectfully,

Timothy Maddox, AIA
