Windstream Holdings LLC of Little Rock is no longer using equipment from Huawei, a controversial Chinese telecommunications equipment maker numerous governments and corporations have cancelled contracts with due to security concerns.
The Federal Communications Commission designated Huawei a national security threat in 2020. That designation required telecommunications carriers to remove Huawei equipment from networks. Windstream, a communications and software company, acquired technology from the Chinese company after Windstream’s 2017 purchase of Earthlink.
“The prohibited equipment represented a small faction of the company’s routing and transportation capability,” Windstream said in a news release.
Windstream removed all final inactive Huawei equipment from networks in March, the company said.
“As an industry leader in network intelligence and infrastructure expansion, Windstream was prepared to quickly and effectively remove the impacted equipment,” Art Nichols, Windstream’s chief technology officer, said in a news release. “Our multi-pronged approach included using alternate routes, replacing equipment where necessary and leveraging the company’s winning fast and flexible process.”
