When folks at the Arkansas Economic Development Commission say they expect to present a super project to the Legislature in January, you know we will start making calls and asking questions to find out more.
So far we haven’t been able to pin down exactly what AEDC hopes to pitch, but our fishing expedition did turn up an interesting potential development from down El Dorado way.
Multiple sources have confirmed that a Canadian sawmill equipment operator called Comact — that’s pronounced “CO-mact” — is looking at buying the long-shuttered Georgia-Pacific sawmill that is now owned by private investors.
What Comact plans to do with the mill depends on whom you ask. It may plan to operate it as a showcase for its state-of-the-art sawmill equipment. Or it may plan to fully outfit it and then resell to a lumber company. (The name we heard was Camfor, a large British Columbia concern, but we haven’t been able to confirm that one.)
Comact is feeling out state and local officials for tax incentives, of course.
Exactly how many jobs might be created is something we couldn’t get a good feel for, but the general consensus is less than 100.
