The Boring Company, Elon Musk’s tunnel construction and infrastructure startup, could partner with Fort Smith to build a water line under the Arkansas River, Arkansas Business content partner KFSM reports.
City Director Neil Martin said the city is among 16 finalists for the company’s “Tunnel Vision Challenge,” a global competition between cities, agencies and private groups to pitch a real‑world tunnel project up to one mile in length and 12 feet in diameter. The Boring Company will build the winning project for free.
For Fort Smith, it would mean an additional 42 million gallons of water every day.
Martin said there were more than 480 applications for the competition.
Fort Smith’s existing water infrastructure, built between the 1930s and 1950s, no longer meets the city’s growing demands.
