Dr. John Shock, ophthalmologist and founding director of the Jones Eye Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, on Wednesday received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the first Health Care Heroes awards luncheon.
The event, which took place at the Embassy Suites in Little Rock, was hosted by Arkansas Business Publishing Group of Little Rock and presented by Complete Care Inc. The event honors individuals, companies and organizations that making a significant impact on the quality of health care in Arkansas.
Shock, now semi-retired, has a had long medical career. After attending U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Duke University Medical School, he served 20 years with the U.S. Army Medical Corps and at 3 different military hospitals.
Shock was later recruited by the UAMS College of Medicine in Little Rock to fill the vacant position of professor and chairman of the ophthalmology department. Shock has more than 100 scientific publications and presentations, patents for several surgical instruments and other devices, and helped train more than 150 ophthalmologists.
The event honored health care organizations and professionals in other categories. The winners were:
- Small Hospital – Baptist Health Medical Center, Arkadelphia
- Large Hospital – Baptist Health Medical Center, Little Rock
- Innovation Hero – Dr. Curtis Lowery, UAMS
- Workplace Wellness Hero – Jayme Mayo, Nabholz Construction Company
- Healthcare Professional of the Year – Brenda Baird Simpson, CHI St. Vincent
- Women’s Health & Wellness Hero – Crystal McCoy, Correct Care Solutions
- Nurse of the Year – Sharon Aureli, Baptist Health Medical Center, Little Rock
- Physician of the Year – Dr. Lee Archer, UAMS
For the awards, ABPG solicited nominations from about 4,000 health care professionals throughout the state. An independent panel of health care experts served as judges and selected the award-winners.
Judges were Dr. Joe Thompson, former surgeon general for the State of Arkansas and current director for the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement; Dr. Wesley Kluck, president of the Arkadelphia Clinic for Children and Young Adults; Ron Sellers, corporate regional director of ARcare; and Holly Van Winkle, RN-BSN program coordinator at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
