The Challenge
Before 2023, Maumelle lacked playgrounds designed to accommodate developmentally and physically disabled children, leaving families needing inclusive recreational spaces underserved. The community needed a more accessible and engaging play area where children of all abilities could play together year-round. City leaders recognized the importance of filling this gap to foster inclusivity, enhance community engagement and provide opportunities for this underserved population to connect with others in the city.
The Solution
In July 2023, Maumelle opened its all-inclusive playground, funded by the city, local foundations and community organizations. Equipped with state-of-the-art, ADA-compliant equipment, the all-ages playground offers full wheelchair accessibility and features sensory-friendly spaces. This project, alongside the city’s splash pad, has become a community hub, providing all children a safe, engaging environment to connect and play. The playground equipment cost $627,000, and the project as a whole cost under $900,000.
Maumelle’s inclusive playground is adjacent to the city’s splash pad, a trail system, fishing area and the public library.
