The Challenge

For years, downtown Alma languished, particularly on Fayetteville Avenue, and by 2014, the dilapidated area was in dire need of revitalization. The area’s outdated infrastructure and underutilized properties hindered growth, leaving local officials concerned about its economic future. With businesses struggling and few community spaces, Alma’s leaders knew they had to take action to transform the area into a commercial hub and improve residents’ quality of life.

The Solution

Alma’s $2.8 million streetscape project rejuvenated the downtown area in 2020. The effort attracted 16 new property owners, four new businesses and revitalized the farmers market. The transformation created spaces for young entrepreneurs and new community gatherings, stimulating economic growth. By investing in ongoing maintenance and forming a nonprofit for future development, Alma has ensured that downtown remains a thriving center for commerce and community.
